The Lamborghini Sian FKP 37 is a Supercapacitor Hybrid

The Sian FKP 37, by Lamborghini's standards it's a wild car. It's also among the first hybrid production cars to use the supercapacitor.

A 34-hp electric motor built in the manual automatic transmission powers the Sian with speeds of up to 80 mph, when the V-12 is in charge. This system helps to make the car more efficient and allows it to accelerate rapidly.

Forged Composites

The Sian's hybrid system has another trick up its sleeves it's a supercapacitor. It's capable of recharging more quickly than lithium-ion batteries and the car can run for up to 63 minutes on electric power alone.

Lamborghini's forged composites are the key to making this happen and the material could eventually make its way into regular production cars. It's initially uncured plastic that's mixed with short lengths of carbon fiber strands. It's not as attractive as pre-woven carbon fiber sheets pre-impregnated, but it's lighter and more durable.

Operators simply cut the carbon fiber into the desired shape, put it into a hot press mould and squeeze it with heat. It takes only a few minutes, while it can take up to a day to make the same thing using traditional methods.

It's not clear whether we'll ever see structurally-forged composite parts in production automobiles however Lamborghini claims its manufacturing-friendly nature means that the material could eventually find its way into cheaper products. It's certainly expensive enough already, but if the manufacturing process is scaled up it could reduce costs on both labor and materials. Forged composites are also more flexible than carbon fiber weave, so engineers can create complex shapes without the need to add weight or expense.

Carbon Skin

The Lamborghini Sian is a sleek roadster with a futuristic style that maximizes aerodynamic efficiency. The long, sculpted contours and distinctive aero wings create a striking profile with its low front and carbon fiber splitter increase stability. The Y-shaped headlights as well as hexagonal forms are classic Lamborghini characteristics that further emphasise the vehicle's distinct styling. The interior is a blend of luxurious Italian craftsmanship and cutting-edge technology.  The Keylab  and the driver's seat are covered with a unique material called Carbon Skin, which is customizable through the Ad Personam program.

The Sian's revolutionary hybrid system is powered by a high-performance capacitor that combine the power of an electric motor with the power of a battery with a voltage of 48 volts. The quick-fired torque fills the gaps in acceleration, and its regenerative brakes replenish the battery. This allows the Sian to travel longer distances with just a tank of gas.

Comparing to a typical lithium-ion battery Sian's supercapacitor is three times more powerful and can be charged in 63 seconds. It is also lighter and smaller. The supercapacitor, which is located in the bulkhead which separates the engine compartment from the cabin is powered by a motor of 34 horsepower that is located on the rear of an automatic transmission.

The Lamborghini Sian was based on Aventador SVJ. This means that it runs the same V12 engine. It has the same chassis, suspension and four-wheel drive. The hybrid powertrain of the Sian is what makes it stand out.

The Sian Lamborghini's first hybrid vehicle and it's an impressive declaration of intent. The raging bull's latest creation uses supercapacitor technology for bringing the power-to-weight ratio closer to a more manageable level without compromising its stunningly powerful V-12 engine.

The name Sian is the Bolognese word meaning lightning, and it's a nod to Lamborghini's past and future. The alphanumeric suffix FKP37 is a tribute to Ferdinand Karl Piech. He was the man who brought Lamborghini to the Volkswagen Group and died just before the launch of Sian. Only 63 examples were produced and all are being spoken for.

Specs


The Sian is based on the Aventador SVJ, so it packs the same V12 and the same chassis and suspension. However, it has an electric motor that is small to make it hybrid. It can be powered by electric energy only at lower speeds and use gasoline engines to accelerate whenever needed.

The electric motor is powered by a supercapacitor which is situated in the bulkhead that connects the cabin and the engine compartment. It's three times more powerful than a battery of the same weight and three times lighter. The system recharges itself on the move through regenerative braking and doesn't need to be connected to the grid. The e-motor is able to fill up torque for upshifts, which enables the car to accelerate 10 percent more quickly than it would without it.

Lamborghini says that the style of the hybrid Sian is intended to convey a sense of pure open-top energy. The exterior features a blend of carbon fiber and orange paint as well as the roof, which is a glass panel inspired by the Periscopio on early Countach prototypes. Other highlights include aluminum components painted in Oro Electrum, which is the color that Lamborghini uses to identify its hybrid cars.

Mitja Borkert, Lamborghini’s head of design has created the cockpit for Sian. The car is a bit more wild than usual for Lamborghini with its numerous creases and cuts. It's not far from getting to the point of looking absurd, but it's an attractive car. The infotainment display is oriented vertically and features a button-free steering with huge paddle shifters.
